By Craig Hale • Jan 16, 2026 • Payment App Fraud
Fraudsters are exploiting refund misunderstandings to convince users to transfer real money voluntarily.
These scams typically involve false claims that a payment was sent by mistake and must be returned immediately.
Victims are often threatened with account suspension or legal consequences if they fail to comply.
• Fake payment confirmation is sent
• Urgent refund request follows
• Psychological pressure is applied
• User sends money manually
• Scammer cuts all contact
On payment apps such as Zelle, Venmo or Cash App, a stranger may send you money "by mistake" and then beg you to send it back. Sometimes the original payment came from a stolen account and is later reversed, so you lose the money you returned. In another version, a caller pretending to be from Amazon, Microsoft or your bank says you were refunded too much. They ask to connect to your computer to "fix" it, change what you see on the screen so it looks like extra money arrived, and then pressure you to send the difference back with gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.
• A stranger says they sent you money by mistake and asks you to return it quickly
• A caller says you were over-refunded and must pay back the difference
• You are asked to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer or a payment app
• You are asked to install a program or open a website that lets someone control your computer
• The caller becomes angry, emotional or threatens police or legal action
• Check your balance yourself in your own banking or payment app, not on a screen someone else shows you
• Do not send money back yourself. Ask the sender to contact their bank or the payment app to reverse it
• Never let a stranger connect to your computer or phone
• If you already sent money, contact your bank or the payment app right away
• Report the scam at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and call Saffron Guru if someone has accessed your computer
Payment platforms handle refunds internally and do not require direct transfers.
Confirming transactions within the app before acting can prevent unnecessary losses.
